In July of 2011, the International Committee of the Illinois Reading Council generously funded a proposal to select, purchase and donate much-needed children's books and professional development books to the primary school at the Centers for Interamerican Studies in Cuenca, Ecuador. CEDEI School is a trilingual (Spanish, English and French) school, focused on inclusivity, multiculturalism and global citizenship.
The pre- and in-service teachers enrolled in the Saint Xavier University ESL/Bilingual Education Program have been researching and recommending children's books and professional texts to purchase for CEDEI School. The graduate students, who are practicing teachers, have taken over the responsibility of organizing and overseeing the project. Lois LaGalle, librarian at Calmeca Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language, and specialist in bilingual children's books, will be assisting us in our final choices as well.
We are grateful to Better World Books for their mission and for providing free international shipping; this allows us to use more grant money on books! We also are very grateful to Beatrice Jacobson, St. Ambrose University, and her students traveling to Ecuador in May 2012; they kindly will be making room for braille teaching materials in their luggage.
Thank you to everyone who is helping to make this project possible; it is truly a collaboration among many thoughtful students and educators.
